Judge Torkwase Sekou
Highly accomplished Criminal Trial Attorney with more than 30 years of experience. She started as an educator, 7 years as a public school teacher with a Masters in Sign Language. Teaching school in the day she earned her Law degree at night student. After 14 years fighting for constitutional tights of the disenfranchised as Public defender, she excelled to the Superior Court. Judge Sekou sat in the Family, Criminal and Civil Divisions of the Essex County Superior Court. She sat two years in the Municipal Court. Highly talented, knowledgeable and experienced Judge with a demonstrated track record of fairness in conducting arraignments, pretrial dispositions conferences, calendar calls jury and non- jury criminal trial; presiding over cases concerning every aspect of society. Devoted to her pledge to the constitution and the United States of America, she remained steadfast in her goal to administer the law and to assure that the legal process is conducted properly and fairly. Skilled in the art of complex negotiation, she helped in expediting cases by acting as a mediator between attorney’s in complex legal matters. She has also been Qualified as a Family Law Mediator through the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education. Judge Sekou has a love for her community and devoted to being active in making a positive change in the world. She continues to extend the breadth of her legal knowledge as a public speaker and legal commentary for both private and public entities, television and news.
